Your Mama Don’t Dance and Your Daddy Don’t Rock N’ Roll

I’ll admit I’m a fan of fun old 80’s music. Hey, it’s my era! And leave it to Loggins and Messina to encapsulate the cause of all of the problems of an entire generation!

Think about it, if the parents of my generation had just lightened up a bit, danced more, and listened to some of that long-haired, hippy rock n’ roll music, we’d all be much better off right now.

Right?

Not!

All right, I’ll admit that I sometimes toy with the possibility of blaming the state of my life on my parent’s inability to cut loose and enjoy themselves. There’s no question about it: learning that life is to be enjoyed is not all that easy when you’re surrounded by folks who just don’t know how to have any fun… let alone dance or rock n’ roll.

However, as a Deliberate Creator, living at the leading edge of thought, I don’t have that luxury. And if you want to firmly place yourself out here on the leading edge of thought, neither do you.

Here’s the thing; It doesn’t matter how “TRUE” it is. Deliberate Creation is not about what is true, what appears to be true, or what has been true in the past.

Deliberate Creation is all about what you choose to be true in the present and the future.

What truth do you want to create?

That is the only question that really matters.

You can continue to blame your life on your parents’ inability to dance and rock n’ roll. If you do, you’ll continue to live the life story you’re in now. And if that works for you, great. Go for it !

But if you want to change your life story, you have to write it. And that means you have to let go of blame – regardless of how “true” it might be.

So if you’re mama didn’t dance and you’re daddy didn’t rock n’ roll stop wasting your time and energy on what they missed out on and get out there and start doing some dancing and rockin’ and rollin’!

How Deep Are Your Grooves?

Record Player - Personal Growth GroovesI was looking for some music to put on the other day and my eye was drawn to the Steely Dan, Aja, CD. I hadn’t listened to that CD in years and I guess I felt like reminiscing a bit.

This CD was one of my favorites when I was growing. Of course, back then, when it first came out, it was a good ole vinyl record! In fact, it was one of the very first records I ever bought back in the 1970s. (Do you even remember the 19702?)

So I put the CD into the player, push play and start singing along to Black Cow, the first song on the CD. And as the first chorus arrives, I realize I’m expecting a skip in the music.

And I remembered that, soon after getting the album I put a little scratch in it that caused a skip at that first chorus in Black Cow. I listened to that song literally hundreds of times with that skip and, even after more than 30-years, my brain still has that skip hard-wired into its pathways.

It made me realize that, just like the grooves in those old LPs, that our neural grooves run deep and strong.

Now, obviously, a skip in the chorus of a Steely Dan song doesn’t have a big impact on my life. But, if I have a groove that creates a glitch in my ability to save money, that does. Or if I have a groove that causes me to skip over loving comments from friends and partners, that does.

So how deep are your grooves? Not just the old songs, but the old beliefs, many of which hold you back from being the best you can be.

Remember, awareness is the first step to change, so when you catch those old beliefs (deep grooves) causing those “skips” in your life, give thanks for the awareness and know that you are beginning to fill in that groove so that you can create a new, more supportive one!

Coincidence Or A Burning Ring Of Fire?

May 9th, 2008 Edward Mills Posted in Comfort Zone, Inner Guidance, Law of Attraction, Personal Growth, coincidence, guidance, internal guidance system, music No Comments »

Now I’m not a big believer in “coincidence.” I find that when I remain open to the signs and signals from the Universe my life tends to flow much more smoothly.

That said, there are certainly times when I’m better at picking up on those signs even when the “coincidences” are a bit subtle and require some stretching to turn them into signs.

And there are other times when I’m a bit slow on the uptake and I either miss the sign altogether or the Universe is forced to send me one of those unmistakable, “bang-bang Maxwell’s Silver Hammer on the head” type of signals that does not need a whole of stretching!

I think you know the kind I’m talking about!

Well last weekend I got one of those.

It began on Saturday morning at the monthly meeting of the Drop In Law of Attraction group. We were exploring the connection between the Comfort Zone and the Law of Attraction. A great topic by the way!

During our discussion, after I had led the group through a visualization where they got to explore the edges of their comfort zone, one of the participants shared that the edge of her comfort zone was a circle of fire surrounding her. I immediately began singing the Johnny Cash song, “Ring of Fire.” I’m not sure where it came from. I’m not a big Johnny Cash fan and have only heard that song a handful of times. But out it came.

So there’s #1!

Later that night at a housewarming party for a friend who had just returned to Sonoma County, I was playing my guitar and singing along with a few of the party guests. Although my song list is significantly shorter than before my daughter was born, I was doing my best at taking requests. Some of them I could muddle through, most of them I either didn’t know or had forgotten.

And then, out of the blue, someone asked if I could play… you guessed it, “Ring of Fire.”

Now in all my years of leading sing-alongs at parties I have NEVER had anyone request Ring of Fire! What’s up with that?

Someone there knew the basic chord progression and another person knew the lyrics, so we were able to put together a passable version (although Johnny was probably rolling over).

There’s #2.

The next day at our local Farmer’s Market, my daughter and I ran into one of her pre-school friends and her dad, Mike Emerson. Ella and Sequoia started playing a bit while Mike and I chatted.

I knew that Mike was a keyboard player and since I’ve been interested in taking some piano lessons, I checked in to see if he knew of any good teachers in the area. Turns out he teaches as well as performs. Cool.

So as we talked about schedules he said that he wouldn’t be available until late in the month because he’s doing a quick European tour with… are you ready for this? Carlene Carter.

Now if you’re not a Country Music fan and don’t know who Carlene Carter is – I didn’t – she’s the daughter of June Carter – who happens to have written Ring of Fire - and Stepdaughter of Johnny Cash – who as you now know made it famous! And Ring of Fire is one of the songs they play in their shows.

So there’s the magic #3 and Maxwell’s bang on my head!

Yes I got it!

The sign that is. Still working out the details of the meaning. Sometimes with these “coincidences” the meaning is obvious and sometimes not so much. With this one I’ve got some ideas, but I haven’t come to any conclusive opinion.

I do know that I’ve been having fun imitating Johnny’s deep, gravelly voice as I belt out “I fell into a burning ring of fire…”

What do you think? What message is the Universe sending me? I’d love to hear your take. And in case you haven’t heard Ring of Fire, here are the lyrics:

Love is a burning thing
and it makes a fiery ring
bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire…

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
and the flames went higher.
And it burns, burns, burns
the ring of fire the ring of fire.

The taste of love is sweet
when hearts like our’s meet.
I fell for you like a child
oh, but the fire went wild..

I fell in to a burning ring of fire…..[etc]
