Watching Thoughts and Being More Mindful

February 9th, 2009 Remez Sasson Posted in being mindful, inner peace, mindfulness No Comments »

Thoughts keep pouring into your mind. Memories keep welling up. For hours, and sometimes days, you go on thinking about things people said about you, discussing them in your mind, and sometimes reaching completely unreal conclusions. You dwell on hurt feelings, real or imaginary, and let mental images of fear, failure and problems arise in your mind. Do you recognize this situation? Do you like it?

Our mind and thoughts carry us away, constantly pulling us here and there. Our thoughts are like a butterfly that flies from one flower to the next, never being still more that for a few seconds.

This situation distracts our attention, wastes our time and energy, makes us tired mentally and physically, and brings stress and strain.

How can we change this situation? By becoming more mindful and attentive of what goes on in our mind, developing the skill of watching our thoughts and feelings without being pulled by them, and by developing some degree of inner detachment. Doing so, will free us from the constant mental chatter that occupies the mind, and would strengthen our control over our mind.

Here are a few suggestions:

- Try to be attentive of what is going inside your mind.

- Watch the state of your mind and your emotions when talking with people. Ask yourself why should you let their thoughts and emotions affect you.

- Understand that you don’t have always to react impulsively or automatically to thoughts, words and actions. You can learn to choose your reactions.

- By watching your thoughts you will not be so compelled to be carried away by every thought that enters your mind.

- Watching your thoughts as they enter and occupy your mind brings calmness and inner peace into your mind.

Here are two excerpts from the book Peace of Mind in Daily Life relating to this subject:

First excerpt

“The mind is a wonderful tool, much more sophisticated and powerful than the most advanced computer or software, but too often it is undisciplined and impatient.

It is usually quite restless, and cannot stand still for a moment. This is why it is so difficult for most people to concentrate their attention on one thought or subject, for more than a short moment. No wonder the mind has been compared to a monkey, because it jumps from one thought to another, just like a monkey that jumps from one branch to another.”

Second excerpt

“You can learn to remain calm and relaxed, and prevent undesirable emotions and thoughts from affecting you without your control or consent. You can learn to listen peacefully to someone recounting his problems or painful story, without feeling tense, without getting emotionally agitated, and without letting the other person’s emotional state affect you. This technique is called detachment.”

How to Clear the Mind of Thoughts

December 14th, 2008 Remez Sasson Posted in Meditation, clearing the mind, concentration, detachment, inner peace No Comments »

A visitor to the website has asked the following question:
“So you are saying once our mind is cleared, we start experienceing inner peace, but what is the most important thing to do to clear your mind? I have read a lot at many websites, but still can’t understand the subject.”

Here is the reply:

Concentration, meditation and the development of inner detachment help clear the mind of thoughts, making room for inner peace.

There is no instant inner peace. In order to attain and enjoy inner peace, work and effort are required, but not everyone is willing to invest the necessary time and energy into this project.

Concentration
The practice of special concentration exercise improve the ability to focus the mind on one single thought or subject and reject unrelated thoughts. This ability helps you gain the skill of opening or closing the mind at will to the constant flow of thoughts.
Information on Concentration
Concentration exercises

Meditation
In meditation you use the skills gained through the development of the power of concentration, in order to free your mind of thoughts. There are may forms of meditation, which all help clear the mind of thoughts, and which ultimately lead to the ability to meditate without thoughts.
More on Meditation

Detachment
Without some inner detachment there is no inner peace. You need to learn not to be affected easily by what people say or do, and not let your emotions rule your life. I am not talking about being indifferent and uncaring. It might seem a paradox, but you can be compassionate, helpful and full of love, and at the same time display inner detachment. It is a mental attitude which leads to common sense, better judgement, more understanding and inner peace.
More on Detachment

You can find in-depth information, instructions and exercises for developing the skills leading to inner peace in my book Peace of Mind in Daily Life.

How to Calm Your Mind

November 24th, 2008 Remez Sasson Posted in Meditation, calm your mind, inner peace No Comments »

Why should you want to calm your mind?

How to Calm Your Mind- Do you get easily nervous and irritated?

- Do you have fears and doubts that cause you to suffer?

- Do you have difficulties falling asleep at night?

- Do certain thoughts keep obsessing your mind, giving you no rest?

- Do you get agitated in every situation?

- Do you have difficulties focusing your mind?

If you experience any of the above situations, then you certainly need to learn how to calm your mind.

Frantic thinking, restless thoughts, impatience, fears and worries cause lack of inner peace, lack of concentration and the inability to think clearly. This leads to making errors, confusion, the inability to make decisions and to failure.

If you want to achieve more in life, you must know how to calm your mind, so that you stay focused and think clearly.

How to calm your mind:

Spend time doing something you love
Find some time each day to do something you love doing, such as a hobby, reading, listening your favorite music, etc.

Seeking Peace of Mind

October 26th, 2008 Remez Sasson Posted in inner peace, peace of mind No Comments »

We all seek peace of mind in one way or another, in one form or another. All of us desire some degree of alleviation, rest or time out from daily chores and tasks, from stress, problems, the news, people and the rush of daily life. There are many ways to find peace, but most of them are temporary means, bringing temporary inner peace. Going to a movie, spending time doing something we love to do, listening to relaxing music and even sleeping are various ways to experience it.

It is also possible to gain a stable state of inner peace, which is independent of external circumstances, but this requires some inner work and techniques.

Here is an excerpt from my book Peace of Mind in Daily life, in which a teacher asks his pupil, why he is seeking peace of mind:

“Teacher: Tell me, why are you seeking peace of mind?

Pupil: I have got several good reasons for desiring it:

  • I often find my mind jumping from one subject to another or thinking on irrelevant matters, not letting me concentrate or think clearly.
  • Worries and anxieties keep coming into my mind, by day and by night.
  • Too often I find myself thinking over and over again on a past unpleasant event, reliving it in my mind, and experiencing all the unpleasantness that was associated with it.
  • Unpleasant emotions and feelings often rise up, due to external situations or causes, arousing unrest and inner emotional storms.
  • Worries, fears and negative thoughts often fill my mind, not giving me a moment of rest.
  • Sometimes my thoughts and worries do not let me fall asleep, and when I do sleep, I do not sleep soundly enough because of them.
  • There is an inner conversation and inner chatter inside my head that never seems to stop.

All this is tiring, straining and weakening, bringing unhappiness and lack of peace. I believe that peace of mind will free me from all these disturbing and exhausting experiences.”

This is an excerpt from the book Peace of Mind in Daily life

Closing the Doors of the Mind

August 9th, 2008 Remez Sasson Posted in inner peace, mind, thoughts No Comments »

If your mind is like a house with wide open windows and doors, with nothing to sort or filter out what comes in, all thoughts are free to enter, dwell there and disturb and affect your mind and life. In this situation there is lack of control over your mental house and over what goes inside it.

Under these conditions the mind allows free access to thoughts, ideas, words and suggestions coming from the outside, from people, the media or from other sources.

For most people, this is the natural state of affairs. However, some seek a way to close the doors and windows of your mind and prevent unnecessary, useless or negative thoughts from occupying their mind and robbing their time and energy.

Someone, who has the key to the doors and windows of his mind, can prevent unnecessary thoughts and worries from occupying his mind. Such a person can choose to think or stop thinking at will. Such a person can enjoy inner peace and be in a state free from worries and anxieties.

The Mental Noise

June 17th, 2008 Remez Sasson Posted in Meditation, concentration, inner peace, mental noise, mind No Comments »

The mental noise is an activity of the mind that almost everyone experiences day and night, and which most people consider as a natural activity of the mind. Though it goes on all the time as a background noise, you usually become aware of it in an acute form, when there is a problem, worry or fear, and you find your mind thinking and thinking about it, until you feel your mind is about to explode from thinking.

The mental noise manifests as inner conversation, inner monologue and as a tendency to constantly think, analyze, compare and repeat thoughts in the mind. It is an involuntary activity, which prevents you from focusing the mind and concentrating on what you are doing. It causes distraction, never being in the present moment, and it wastes a lot of time and mental energy, which could have been use for better purposes.

Some, will not agree with me, and say that constant thinking is a sign of being alive and active, and that they prefer to be constantly thinking. They feel that life would be boring and lifeless without the constantly thinking. This is because they have never experienced any other state of consciousness, and constant thinking seems to them to be the natural state of consciousness.

When you are able to reduce the mental noise your five sense will function better, your ability to concentrate would grow and you will feel more calm and in control of yourself. You don’t lose anything in this process, but only gain a lot.

I have written two articles on the mental noise:

1. The Mental Noise

Mental noise is the constant chatter of the mind that never stops. It is the inner conversation or inner monologue that constantly goes on in the mind.

Many are unaware of this mental noise, because it has become a deeply embedded habit, and is considered as a natural and inseparable part of life.

This mental noise is like a background noise that never ceases, from the moment of waking up in the morning, to the moment of falling asleep at night. Often, it even prevents you from falling asleep. It is a sort of inner voice that constantly analyzes everything about our lives, surroundings and the people we know. It is a voice in the head that just keeps talking and talking!

The mind often repeats the same thought over and over again, like in a loop or like a record that got stuck. If this is a positive thought that’s fine, but too often this a negative thought or a negative mental images that just intensify stress, worry, anger or frustration. These are thoughts that you absolutely do not need.

2. How to Calm Down the Mental Noise

After reading the article on the mental noise, it is time to start doing something about it. As you now know, the mental noise is the inner dialogue and constant chatter that goes on in the mind almost all the time. Sometimes we are not aware of it, and at other times it is most disturbing and distracting the attention.

When do you become more aware of the mental noise and find it disturbing?
When you need to focus your mind on a certain activity, such as studying, reading, solving problems or anything else. At this time you become more aware of the buzz and constant flow of irrelevant, and often useless or distracting thoughts. This is the mental noise.

Overcoming Nonstop Thinking

April 13th, 2008 Remez Sasson Posted in inner peace, mind, peace of mind No Comments »

Are you aware that your mind is always occupied with thoughts? Are you aware that thoughts constantly demand your attention, dictate your behavior and reactions?

Do you sometimes feel that your mind is going to explode from nonstop thinking? Can you focus your attention on what you are doing at any moment, or are you constantly distracted by all kinds of thoughts, negative thinking or negative expectations? You need to learn to overcome your nonstop thinking in order to gain control over your attention.

Do you sometimes wish your mind could just stop thinking for a little while, and let you enjoy some rest and peace? Like an engine, it has to rest to avoid wear and tear. It needs some rest from time to time, in order to recharge itself and your body.

The mind often looks like a cluttered room, with no free space and no place to move. When you empty your room it will look bigger and tidier, and it will be more pleasant to be there. So it is with your mind. Remove the clutter - the unnecessary thoughts, the worries and the fears, and your life would look happier and brighter.

Lack of Inner Peace

April 8th, 2008 Remez Sasson Posted in inner peace, mind No Comments »

Do you often find yourself thinking nonstop? Do you sometimes feel that your mind is going to explode from thoughts that don’t stop for one moment? Do you sometimes wish your mind could just stop thinking for a little while, and let you enjoy some rest and peace? Do you sometimes desire you could overcome your lack of inner peace?

It is possible that you are not always aware of the restlessness of your mind and lack of inner peace. This behavior of the mind is so deeply embedded that it is taken for granted and is considered to be natural. Thoughts keep coming and going, occupying your mind every moment of the day, wasting precious mental and emotional energy, and sometimes making your head ache.

Life is usually filled with tension, strain, rush and pressure at work and at home. These make the mind even more restless, and create and attract more thoughts into the mind. Problems, difficulties, fears, worries and hurt feelings increase even more the mental restlessness and lack of inner peace. At these times you become more acutely aware of the lack of inner peace and the need for some mental silence.

What happens when you want to concentrate, study or meditate? Suddenly you feel a swarm of thoughts disturbing and distracting your attention. What happens when you worry, are angry or emotionally excited? In such situations you feel that your mind is exploding from an endless number of thoughts. Are these thoughts useful for you? Not at all. They just add to the excitement and restlessness, and increase the sense of lack of inner peace and tranquility.

Restless Thoughts Are Like Restless Fish

March 12th, 2008 Remez Sasson Posted in Meditation, concentration, inner peace, mind, restless thoughts No Comments »

Are you aware of the restlessness of your thoughts? If you watch your mind, you will see that it jumps from one subject to another, never standing still. The mind is always busy, too often with trivialities. One moment you might be thinking one thing, and the next moment thinking about something else. This is a deeply embedded habit that constantly distracts the mind and prevents it from focusing on one thing at a time.

If you wish to succeed in anything, you need to be able to overcome the restlessness of your thoughts. The key to every job well done and to every success is concentration - the ability to focus the mind on one thing.

When there are no restless thoughts - There is inner peace.

In my book, Peace of Mind in Daily life, I have written a short story, illustrating the similarity between the behavior of fish and the behavior of thoughts. It is about a young man who asked a spiritual teacher to help him gain peace of mind. To his amazement, the teacher sent him to the river, to watch the fish swimming in the water.

Here is an excerpt from this story:

After sitting by the river for some time, a revelation suddenly flashed through his mind and he shouted excitedly: “My mind and my thoughts are restless too, exactly like the flock of fish. This is probably what the teacher wanted me to understand.”

Living Without Stress and Anxiety

March 7th, 2008 Remez Sasson Posted in anxiety, inner peace, stress No Comments »

Here is an excerpt from the article ’Twelve Secrets to Living Without Stress and Anxiety’, which you can read here.

Everyone would agree that life can be happier and healthier, without stress and anxiety. Your attitude, your expectations, and the way you think, have much to do with whether you get stressed and anxious easily, or can stay calm and positive. Below you will find a few secrets and tips that can help you.

Please remember that everything you read can only help, if you think about what you read and put it into practice.

  1. Anxieties, fears and worries feed on your attention. The more attention you give them, the stronger they grow. The less attention you give them, the weaker they get.
  2. Learn to let go. Don’t hold on to unpleasant memories and oppressing thoughts.
  3. Don’t depend for your self esteem on what people say or think about you.

  • Do you need or enjoy fear, worries and restlessness? If you don’t, then why do you keep inviting them into your mind?

Increase Your Level Of Inner Peace

February 19th, 2008 Other Authors Posted in Life, Spirituality, abundance, inner peace, negative emotions, peace of mind, positive energy No Comments »

Do you want to have more inner peace? You can accomplish your goal by taking steps that will help you grow physically, mentally and financially.

Focus on your health. Get plenty of aerobic exercise and eat an abundance of nutritious food every day. Do activities such as jogging, cycling, swimming or brisk walking at least thirty minutes almost every day. Follow the established nutrition guidelines.

Reduce the amount of time you spend harboring negative emotions. Do not get mad over little things. Avoid carrying grudges and hatred in your heart.

Handle your stress properly. When you feel tense or pressed, take a deep breath and remember that your performance, health and level of inner peace will be affected negatively by an overload of stress. Have you heard the phrase that says, “Rise to the occasion?” When it is very important to perform at your best level, you must relax and totally concentrate on your task.

Do not be ashamed to cry or express your anger in a harmless manner. If you want or need to cry or scream, please do so because it will help you feel better; furthermore, suppressing your grief or anger will hurt your immune system.

Laugh alone and with others at things that are funny but harmless. Laugh at things that have already happened. If you think of something funny around others, do not laugh too loudly.

Think positively. Turn negative experiences into positive experiences by contemplating the benefits that may come from what has happened. For example, if you lose a few dollars you put into a side pocket or shallow back pocket, you can use this error to become more careful and avoid losing a lot more money in the future.

Do not dwell on the past. This is counterproductive and will not bring you peace of mind. Only use bad memories of your past to avoid repeating your mistakes.

Think about your good experiences as much as possible. Use these good memories to become happier.

Be courteous to others. Being mean brings guilt and a lack of inner peace.

Volunteer your time at least occasionally. Help others in need.

To increase your chances of feeling comfort and peace of mind in your golden years, prepare for your retirement. Create and stick to a budget. Save at least ten percent of your income. Take advantage of any retirement accounts provided by your employer.

Use your physical and mental energy to do good things. Do what you can to make a difference.
